Biography:

James "Rhodey" Rhodes, also known as War Machine, is a central figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First appearing in Iron Man (2008) portrayed by Terrence Howard, he was later played by Don Cheadle from Iron Man 2 (2010) onward. Rhodey is a close friend and confidante of Tony Stark, serving as a liaison between Stark Industries and the U.S. Air Force.

In Iron Man 3 (2013), Rhodey is temporarily rebranded as the Iron Patriot. This occurs when the War Machine armor is painted in the patriotic colors of red, white, and blue, and placed under the control of the U.S. government, specifically under the direction of President Ellis. The Iron Patriot persona is briefly used for public relations purposes and to project an image of American strength and security in the wake of the Chitauri invasion.

Despite the new paint job and the political implications, Rhodey remains the pilot and operator of the armor. He eventually reclaims the War Machine identity after the threat posed by Aldrich Killian and his Extremis soldiers is neutralized. The Iron Patriot armor design, however, remains a recognizable and iconic variation of the War Machine suit within the MCU.
